MarksCan! A Free Web App for Marking MCQ Answer Sheets
Marking multiple-choice papers involves more than calculating scores. Teachers also need to check unclear responses, correct student details, and understand which questions caused difficulty. MarksCan! brings these tasks together in a free-to-use web app found here: https://physicstjc.github.io/markscan. This app is conceptualised by Mr Melvyn Lee from Temasek Junior College and co-developed with me.
From Scanned Sheets to Marked Reports
Start with the supplied answer-sheet template, customise its headings and instructions, and print it for your students. In MarkScan, upload your student directory, enter the exam title, and save the answer key. After the exam, upload the scanned answer sheets as PDF files and let the app process them.
The marked sheet preview displays each student’s scanned answers with marking annotations and a total score. Teachers can move between sheets, compare the detected responses with the original shading, and review flagged issues such as missing answers, multiple selections, or unrecognised student IDs.
Keep Teachers in Control
When a response needs correcting, you can edit it directly under the current student summary. Answers are listed in question order and separated by semicolons. Save your changes to update the student’s marks, reports, and analysis. You can also correct student IDs and use X in the answer key to exclude a voided question from scoring.
See What the Results Reveal
The item analysis report shows how students answered each question. Its printed heatmap uses increasingly strong green for popular correct answers, and yellow through red for increasingly popular wrong options. This helps teachers spot difficult questions and response patterns worth discussing in class.
The class performance report shows the distribution of marks within each class, making it easier to compare results and plan follow-up teaching.
Export the Reports You Need
Print individual or batch student reports, produce marked answer sheets, save item analysis as a PDF, and download student entries as a CSV for further checking or analysis.
Your Data Stays on Your Device
MarkScan processes uploaded student lists and scanned answer sheets locally in your browser; their contents are not uploaded to a server. Saved directories, answer keys, and results remain in that browser, so download your final files for safekeeping.
